man accused of a 2002 gangland killing that sparked a crime wave in Sydney's south-west has appeared in court after being extradited from the United States.Raphael Joseph, 31, faced Sydney's Central Local Court today charged with the murder of Dimitri De-Baz, 28, in a Sefton pub car park in December 2002.Police say Mr De-Baz, of Fairfield, had been drinking at the Playhouse Hotel with a large group of friends when he got into a fight with another group of men.He was gunned down later that night in a shooting in which two others were also seriously injured.The shooting sparked a gang war in the city's south-west with tit for tat shootings and kidnappings that prompted police to set up a dedicated unit.Joseph was arrested in San Diego, in California, in October 2006 and fought his extradition until last monthNSW detectives accompanied him to Sydney yesterday and subsequently charged him with murder.In a brief appearance today, Joseph did not apply for bail, which was formally refused by the magistrate, Allan Moore.He was remanded in custody until April 22, to reappear in the same court via audio-visual link.Joseph sat impassively in the dock today, dressed in a grey DKNY T-shirt, and sporting a neat goatee beard and short hair.
