Jesse Barnes the Red Barn gun shop burgalar break-ins has been arrested

Thursday, 3 April 2008

Jesse Barnes, 17, crawled through a ceiling during two gun shop burglaries in March.
Now, he and a 15-year-old boy detectives say helped him with the Red Barn gun shop break-ins have been arrested, according to sheriff's reports. On Tuesday, detectives arrested Faheen Nelson just hours after Barnes made a daring escape from the Manatee County Courthouse. At noon, a sheriff's detective stopped Barnes at the courthouse after being tipped off he would be there. Both Barnes and Nelson were already suspects in the March 8 and March 22 burglaries at the Red Barn gun shop, in the 5200 block of 14th Street West, according to sheriff's reports.
The detective began questioning Barnes in a jury room on the third floor of the courthouse. He eventually refused to answer questions. With Barnes' mother outside, the detective went to tell her he would be arresting her son. When he returned to the room, Barnes was nowhere to be found.
Barnes had climbed into the ceiling, found an open window and scaled down the side of the courthouse three stories, according to sheriff's spokesman Dave Bristow.
Once on the ground, Barnes took off running with several deputies and bailiffs giving chase down Manatee Avenue West into the Wares Creek neighborhood.
Barnes hid behind the Woman's Club of Bradenton building in the 1700 block of Manatee Avenue West. When a sheriff's dog found him, Barnes hit the dog over the head with a rock.
The dog bit Barnes' leg and deputies took him into custody. He was checked out at Manatee Memorial Hospital, before being taken to a juvenile detention center, Bristow said.Barnes was arrested on charges of K-9 battery and resisting arrest.
By 5 p.m., Nelson was also in custody after both he and Barnes admitted to the Red Barn burglaries, according to sheriff's reports.
According to the reports, the two teens cut a large hole in scaffolding behind the gun shop.Barnes then climbed through the ceiling of the gun shop, reports state, dropped down into the store and stole several rifles. He would then hand the weapons down to Nelson waiting outside, the sheriff's reports state.
Each teen faces charges of two counts of armed burglary, two counts of grand theft of a firearm, two counts of criminal mischief and one count of dealing in stolen property.
Red Barn owner Roger McManaman said he is relieved that arrests have been made.
"I am happy," he said. "Especially since guns are involved."
